I ended up buying a Derwent electric eraser when I was taking an online art class. It was on the supply list, and I admit, I thought it was a waste of money. Until I started using it. That’s when I discovered just how much better it works than a regular eraser.

Watch my review of the Derwent electric eraser on my YouTube channel.  The video shows just how well the electric eraser does compared to a standard white eraser, so it’s worth watching.

At about $16 Canadian (or $11 USD) , a Derwent electric eraser is quite a bit more expensive than an inexpensive white eraser, which often runs anywhere from $1 – $3. I use both for different purposes. The electric eraser uses a small vibration to erase, and you can just pull it through where you want to erase.

The electric eraser is excellent for erasing graphite very cleanly. When I compare it to how a regular white eraser erases, the electric eraser is far better. It’s amazing how much pencil it can remove – getting back to the white of the paper much more easily than a regular eraser.

Another advantage of the electric eraser is that it is quite a small, narrow eraser, so you can very finely erase small spaces. That is difficult, if not impossible for a regular eraser. With the electric eraser, you can apply your graphite, then remove small white features, which makes drawing hair or other small details easy. The flip side of this is that it’s not useful to remove large amounts of graphite. A regular eraser is more useful for that.

Some practical info

The Derwent electric eraser came with a few refill erasers. I find they do get short and they don’t fit into the eraser hole anymore, so I keep the short ones, then stack them so I can use as much of the refills as possible.

It also takes AAA batteries. They do last quite a bit of time so you’ll rarely need to swap them out.

I have one small downside of the electric eraser. It’s quite large, because the handle fits the battery and the motor, so I don’t travel with it. I only use it at home. It’s still quite useful and I’m glad that I purchased it.
