Learning to draw takes practice, and a great way for beginners to improve their skills is drawing simple, everyday items, like drawing an apple. An apple is a great item to sketch – it helps practice drawing three-dimensional form and improve your shading.

Why drawing an apple helps with your drawing practice
It’s like drawing a slightly more complex sphere. Learning to draw a sphere is a great place to start when you’re an absolute beginner. Once you have that under your belt, moving onto drawing an apple allows you to build on your skills with an object that is very similar to a sphere, with minor form differences.
You can get to know your pencils. As a beginner, you’ll just be beginning your journey of getting to know your art supplies. Practicing drawing an apple can be an exercise that isn’t too complex, so you can test out different pencils or apply graphite more firmly or lightly to achieve different values. I often use different pencils in one drawing, but you can also try out using one pencil to get three, four or five different values.
It doesn’t take too long to draw. You won’t be investing hours just trying to draw one item. I suggest challenging yourself to drawing an apple a day for a week or even a month. This can help you get into the habit of drawing daily, which is a great way to boost your drawing skills.
You need very few supplies. Just some paper and pencil or two. If you have an eraser, that’s a bonus. If you don’t have an apple, you can draw it from memory.
