I have a variety of different pencils in my drawing kit, including some mechanical pencils. The tricky part of using a mechanical pencil is so many of them are low quality and the pencil lead will break. I picked up some clutch pencils with 2mm wide leads, which have become an indispensable part of my toolkit.

You use a different type of pencil sharpener for these pencils: a lead pointer. This nifty little device has a piece that holds your pencil in place as it rotates around a grinder, sharpening your lead. The shavings then collect in a little tub. You have a couple options for how sharp you want your pencil to be, and a spot to wipe off any excess pencil dust after sharpening.

The first time I tried to use my lead pointer, I wasn’t quite sure how to use it, but once I figured it out, it’s pretty easy. Watch me demonstrate how to use a lead pointer on my YouTube channel.
